I hope you and your family are doing well.  My family and I have been very busy.  Sydney is completing her first year at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and Alex is completing his sophomore year at Prescott High School.  Holly and I spent a few days during spring break with Sydney and Alex fishing on DeGray Lake. It was good to have all four of us under the same roof again for a few days! 

When I heard that I was going to be unopposed this year, I knew it was too good to be true—and it was.  When I walked to the end of my drive way at home in Prescott on Sunday, April 13th and picked up the newspaper, I quickly learned that I will have an opponent this year!  The Green Party of Arkansas recently selected their nominee to run against me on the November General Election Ballot—a Hot Springs Attorney. 

With your help, I will continue to represent the values we share for another two years.  But we can not take my opponent for granted—remember Frank White and Jay Dickey?  No one had heard of them either, but they won!  That’s why I will always take every opponent seriously and why I am asking you to contribute to my campaign today.  Your donation by May 31^st will help me prepare for my re-election campaign against my opponent.

In addition to making the weekly trip to our nation’s capitol, I have just completed my 29 county tour through Arkansas’s Fourth Congressional District, holding town hall meetings and listening to the people I have the privilege to represent in Washington each week. I think one of the problems with Washington today is that too many members of Congress stop going home and stop listening to the people they have been elected to represent.  I promised myself to never let that happen.  That’s why if we are not voting in our nation’s capitol, you won’t find me in Washington, DC, but rather back home traveling the 150 towns that make up Arkansas’s Fourth Congressional District.

I am proud of the work we have done since the Democrats regained the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives 16 months ago.  We passed historic energy legislation that provides the largest investment in homegrown bio-fuels in our nation’s history—strengthening our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil while creating new “green collar” jobs here at home.  We also cut student loan interest rates in half, raised the federal minimum wage for the first time in a decade, passed the bi-partisan 9-11 Commission recommendations to improve our nation’s security, and provided our veterans with the largest increase in health care benefits in the history of the Veterans Administration.

While we have accomplished a lot, there is still much work to be done. We must complete our work on legislation to combat global warming, make health care more affordable, ensure our children receive a world class education so they will be prepared to compete in this 21^st Century global economy, and continue to demand a new direction in Iraq, while supporting our troops.
